What's Wrong With America?

Who better to highlight genuine glamour than the heroine of Ugly Betty, the conscience of a fictional, heartless fashion magazine? And delivered this empowering speech in last year's breakout feminist film "Barbie"?

Relatively recently, America lost 30 pounds. And that's great. She loves and accepts her body as it is. And we celebrate her accomplishment. I wish I could find the will to lose 30 pounds (or 50)...

Possible health concerns aside, what was wrong with the old America? Nothing. Did she feel the need to keep up (or down, depending on your perspective) with Hollywood's cult of skinny? Maybe it was the stubborn baby fat. Who knows? Who cares? She looks fabulous; always has. What works for me is that perhaps now magazines won't feel the need to do this:

This picture encapsulates the love/hate the US has with women and our bodies. So-called "real women" are celebrated, but in the same breath, we're reminded, "as long as they're thin." Nowhere is this more apparent than in this cover from a few years ago of Glamour magazine (yes, that Glamour magazine, the same that suggested BW should perm their hair for the office, setting off a virtual war in the black community). The lovely and talented America Ferrera (you have seen "Barbie" and "Real Women Have Curves", haven't you?) was done so wrong by Glamour and society. Obviously, Glamour photoshopped America's face onto someone else's skinnier body. Was there any reason for this? Yeah, the name of the magazine is Glamour. No more of this garbage! Who makes these boneheaded decisions? And who does such a shitty job photoshopping? I could do a better on a Leapfrog. Just to show you how wrong Glamour is, here's a shot of America in all her glory.
