When an emergency happens, you probably won't have time to gather supplies. That's why a go bag is one of the simplest and most effective preparedness tools you can put together. Whether you're evacuating due to a wildfire, earthquake, flood, extended power outage, or another unexpected event, having essential items packed and ready can make a stressful situation much more manageable.
In this video, I'll walk you through the contents of my personal go bag. Your needs may be different, but hopefully this gives you a practical starting point for building a kit that works for you and your family.
Items to consider for your go bag:
Water and emergency food
Prescription medications (3-7 day supply)
Copies of important documents
Phone charger and power bank
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Multi-tool or pocket knife (where legal)
Whistle
N95 masks
Hygiene supplies
Change of clothes and sturdy shoes
Rain poncho or lightweight jacket
Blanket or emergency bivvy
Cash in small bills
Spare keys
Local maps
Notepad and pen
Glasses or contact lens supplies
Pet supplies (if applicable)
Infant or child supplies (if applicable)
Comfort items such as snacks, cards, or a favorite book
Remember, the best go bag isn't the one with the most gear. It's the one you've prepared in advance, can carry comfortably, and know how to use.
